The tropical island of Tobago may well be known for its beautiful beaches and Caribbean sunshine, but it is certainly not known for its wealth of museums. However, that said, the Tobago Museum is a real cultural highlight and is to be found within the Barrack Guard House, at the imposing late 18th-century Fort King George, on the outskirts of Scarborough.

As well as the Tobago Museum, the island is also home to a handful of art galleries, which are located at Lowlands, Mount Irvine and also Store Bay. Each of these galleries feature changing exhibitions and offer paintings for sale, usually created by local islanders.

Also known as the Museum of Tobago History and once used as a military prison some 150 years ago, this popular attraction really is one that should appear on any sightseeing itinerary. Visitors will be able to enjoy an impressive exhibition of Amerindian relics, military artefacts and buttons, colonial treasures and many ancient pottery pieces, together with an actual skeleton of a past native. There are also displays relating to the former period of slavery and extensive collection of both antique maps and coins.
